Term: | pronunciation of SV skit | » answer |
I am writing a drama character whose Swedish father has been known to say, "That is a crock of skit." And by skit he is not referring to a short comical or satirical theatrical presentation. But skit as commonly pronounced seems to break SV pronunciation rules. To my EN-tuned ear it sounds like "whidth." What is the deal? Is some kind of polite evasion or euphony at play? |

Term: | Looking for translation of "Slantkalle" | » answer |
If there are any Swedish speakers who could help me find the definition of the word Slantkalle I would be very grateful. I have searched around but have not been able to find anything. |

Hello! Sorry for the late answer. Sounds like this is supposed to be "klantskalle" – a clumsy person. |
Term: | Word scramble | » answer |
Hello! So A friend of mine wrote me letters to open over the span of 24 days. At the bottom of each letter was an individual letter from the alphabet. At the end I'm supposed to put them all to together to try to figure out what says. But about halfway through an "ä" was at the bottom so it's not in English. I've gotten to the end and it shows a Swedish flag pointing to an American flag so I'm guessing it's saying it's a Swedish phrase that I have to translate. But I don't know any Swedish so I can't figure it out, could you help? Here is my key: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Here are the letters I have been given: S,roatkljigdrnfaägedaraf |

Hello! My mother and I are going to be getting tattoos in the Swedish language. This will be a sort of tribute to one of our family members and to our heritage. We are wanting to know how to translate: 1) love life 2) I love you to the moon and back 3) to the moon and back |
Answer: | Translate | #903589 |
1) älska livet 2) Jag älskar dig till månen och tillbaka (although that doesn't sound very swedish at all) 2) till månen och tillbaka (and neither does that) /Kurt |

Term: | please critique my translation of Milrök | » answer |
Hi there -- I'd like to perform an English cover of the Sofia Karlsson song Milrök, whose lyrics are a poem by Dan Andersson. (See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zwk-0iqdDsg for her version.) I couldn't find an existing translation, so I attempted to write one myself with the help of a bunch of dictionaries, despite not actually speaking any Swedish. Please tell me if I managed to capture the spirit of the poem. It's not meant to be word-for-word exact, as I was trying to preserve the rhyme scheme and keep the meter singable, but I want to be faithful to the original message. I'm particularly worried that I might have misunderstood the third stanza (which is why I didn't contort it further to make the rhyme work better). Any constructive criticism would be much appreciated! Div Slomin Milrök by... » show full text |
Term: | Looking for an "Ort" | » answer |
I am looking for a city I think. It is on ArkivDigital. In a house record it lists the place where this person moved to and I cannot figure it out. The AID # is v112272.b150.s167 top left hand side of page. It is for Nils Andersson who moved to "Obettamd ort", that's the best interpretation I can come up with. In a moving-out record I found this word written again which is printed more legibly. It is AID # v112277.b185.s12 and is for Peter Månsson on the left side of the page , entry #14. it says " Obertåmd Ort" as best a I can figure it out. does anyone know what parish this " Obertåmd Ort" is located in? Any help is appreciated. Gary |
Answer: | #870432 | |
I don't have access to ArkivDigital, but maybe it's simply "obekant ort"? Eller "obestämd ort"? |
Term: | Future possibilities on bilingual English - Swedish translations etc....? | » answer |
Hi :) Firstly…. I've recently bought an interesting and very useful Swedish - English bilingual book on Amazon called "The Life of Cleopatra" by Redback books containing 77 pages, however in this case the story is secondary and not important. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kindle-Store-Redback-Books/s?ie=UTF8&p... It has three separate chapters, the first is Bilingual which contains short sentences or paragraphs in Swedish with the English translation just below. The second chapter is the same complete story in Swedish only. Whilst the third and last chapter is the same complete story in English only. I've found it very useful and helpful indeed and would recommend it to anyone, but unfortunately there are only I think two or three other Swedish/English... » show full text |

"Jag tycker din svenska var riktigt bra även om engelsk ordföljd gå igen." Not sure of gå igen...."even if English word order is different" ? Or that Swedish word order is different ? Thanks :-) |
Answer: | #864156 | |
He thinks your Swedish is really good, even though your English word order is still there, haunting your sentences :]. There should be an 'r' at the end of 'gå' though. |
Answer: | #864170 | |
See what you mean thanks, think I'll use the words spoiling or marring though as they would be the usual words used in English .... :) |
Answer: | #864183 | |
Well, that's a bit more explicit than he expressed it. Your English word order is lingering, basically. I think your word order haunting your Swedish was a quite fitting expression. What is it for? |
Term: | translation needed for a word | » answer |
Hey :-) I've been reading a lot of blogs and websites to improve in Swedish. There is a word I keep seeing around but I cannot find its meaning. I'm so sorry if it is a bad word or curse word or something very rude (although I don't think it is). The word is : askorta. thanks |
Answer: | #864185 | |
Hello! 'askorta' means 'really short' or 'short as hell'. as- is an intensifying prefix, and 'korta' is the plural form of 'kort', which means short. |

I'm getting married to a wonderful Swedish man and I'd like to include some Swedish in an engraved gift and possibly my vows. I don't completely trust online translators. I'd like to ask a native Swede but I don't know any-other than my fiance! I'm looking for proper grammatical translations of the following: My darling forever My love for all time. My darling for all time. For all time My love, my heart, my life, my forever. |

In the TV documentary called “Palme: Sista timmarna”, there is a section when someone tells the following about Palme: “Jag har fått för mig att Olof Palme drevs väldigt mycket av om de han verkligen ville skulle få mindre politisk makt, om de kände sig hotade av honom, då hade han gjort rätt.” I don’t understand, what does it mean? Term: | dårftädes | » answer |
What is the English translation for the word "dårftädes". I cannot find it's meaning on the internet. The word appears after an ancestors name in a parish marriage record. Thanks. |
Answer: | #834143 | |
Are you sure it was "dårftädes" and not like därstädes(meaning: there; on that place)? If it really was dårftädes I have no clue; probably some regional word with an old spelling. |
