please critique my translation of Milrök » answer
by divbyzero, 2017-03-29, 06:37  Spam?  74.104.150...
Hi there --

I'd like to perform an English cover of the Sofia Karlsson song Milrök, whose lyrics are a poem by Dan Andersson.  (See for her version.)  I couldn't find an existing translation, so I attempted to write one myself with the help of a bunch of dictionaries, despite not actually speaking any Swedish.  Please tell me if I managed to capture the spirit of the poem.  It's not meant to be word-for-word exact, as I was trying to preserve the rhyme scheme and keep the meter singable, but I want to be faithful to the original message.  I'm particularly worried that I might have misunderstood the third stanza (which is why I didn't contort it further to make the rhyme work better).

Any constructive criticism would be much appreciated!

Looking for an "Ort" » answer
by Grose, 2017-03-27, 20:12  Spam?  70.97.93....
I am looking for a city I think. It is on ArkivDigital. In a house record it lists the place where this person moved to and I cannot figure it out. The AID # is v112272.b150.s167 top left hand side of page. It is for Nils Andersson who moved to "Obettamd ort", that's the best interpretation I can come up with. In a moving-out record I found this word written again which is printed more legibly. It is AID # v112277.b185.s12 and is for Peter Månsson on the left side of the page , entry #14. it says " Obertåmd Ort" as best a I can figure it out. does anyone know what parish this " Obertåmd Ort" is located in? Any help is appreciated.

Future possibilities on bilingual English - Swedish translations etc....? » answer
by Arcadian (GB), 2017-03-24, 15:23  Spam?
Hi :)

I've recently bought an interesting and very useful Swedish - English bilingual book on Amazon called "The Life of Cleopatra" by Redback books containing 77 pages, however in this case the story is secondary and not important.

It has three separate chapters, the first is Bilingual which contains short sentences or paragraphs in Swedish with the English translation just below.

The second chapter is the same complete story in Swedish only.

Whilst the third and last chapter is the same complete story in English only.

I've found it very useful and helpful indeed and would recommend it to anyone, but unfortunately there are only I think two or three other Swedish/English...

Can't get exact meaning at the end » answer
by Arcadian (GB), 2017-01-30, 19:39  Spam?
"Jag tycker din svenska var riktigt bra även om engelsk ordföljd gå igen."

Not sure of gå igen...."even if English word order is different" ? Or that Swedish word order is different ?

Thanks :-)
by njtwkr (SE), 2017-02-03, 14:23  Spam?
He thinks your Swedish is really good, even though your English word order is still there, haunting your sentences :]. There should be an 'r' at the end of 'gå' though.
by Arcadian (GB), 2017-02-03, 16:30  Spam?
See what you mean thanks, think I'll use the words spoiling or marring though as they would be the usual words used in English .... :)
by njtwkr (SE), 2017-02-03, 17:51  Spam?
Well, that's a bit more explicit than he expressed it. Your English word order is lingering, basically. I think your word order haunting your Swedish was a quite fitting expression. What is it for?
translation needed for a word » answer
by JuliaMay (UN), 2016-12-27, 18:11  Spam?
Hey :-)

I've been reading a lot of blogs and websites to improve in Swedish. There is a word I keep seeing around but I cannot find its meaning. I'm so sorry if it is a bad word or curse word or something very rude (although I don't think it is).
The word is : askorta.

by njtwkr (SE), 2017-02-03, 18:30  Spam?
'askorta' means 'really short' or 'short as hell'.
as- is an intensifying prefix, and 'korta' is the plural form of 'kort', which means short.
Wedding gift help! » answer
by Stuck Canuck, 2016-10-01, 06:14  Spam?  96.50.253....
I'm getting married to a wonderful Swedish man and I'd like to include some Swedish in an engraved gift and possibly my vows. I don't completely trust online translators. I'd like to ask a native Swede but I don't know any-other than my fiance! I'm looking for proper grammatical translations of the following:

My darling forever

My love for all time.

My darling for all time.

For all time

My love, my heart, my life, my forever.
by njtwkr (SE), 2016-11-24, 01:45  Spam?

I apologize for not having seen this earlier. I have no idea if this is still relevant. If it is, good, if not, I am sure it went great anyway! Congratulations!

Min älskling för alltid
Min kärlek i evighet
Min älskling i evighet
I evighet
Min kärlek, mitt hjärta, mitt liv, min evighet.
Palme: Sista timmarna » answer

In the TV documentary called “Palme: Sista timmarna”, there is a section when someone tells the following about Palme:

“Jag har fått för mig att Olof Palme drevs väldigt mycket av om de han verkligen ville skulle få mindre politisk makt, om de kände sig hotade av honom, då hade han gjort rätt.”

I don’t understand, what does it mean? Please, help...

Information about a change in the guidelines regarding delete votes » answer
by Paul (AT), 2016-06-27, 17:49  Spam?
The basic rule in GL 3 is "Always confirm the first correct posting!". So far, when there was no completely correct posting, and someone voted for a deletion, this delete vote was the first correct posting, so it had to be confirmed. However, most of the contributors understood this differently or didn't want to comply with it, for reasons I understand. In the last months this rule was challenged several times, which caused a lot of discussions. In the end I came to the conclusion that the vast majority of the community wants less strict delete rules. After discussing some text suggestions (forum: #846903), the following rule was accepted and is now effective:

+Always confirm the first correct posting! [...]
A [del] vote is considered a correct posting if no previous posting (input, vote or comment) contained...

What is the English translation of "konstalsterna"?
Konstalsterna  #840441

Konstalsterna are the two words konst (art) and alster (result from work/effort) put together. Alsterna is the definite article plural of alster. Alster is a rather uncommon word in modern Swedish.

What is the English translation for the word "dårftädes". I cannot find it's meaning on the internet. The word appears after an ancestors name in a parish marriage record.

by abc123andreas, 2016-02-15, 00:01  Spam?  46.239.114...
Are you sure it was "dårftädes" and not like därstädes(meaning: there; on that place)? If it really was dårftädes I have no clue; probably some regional word with an old spelling.
by ppryor, 2016-02-15, 01:46  Spam?  73.202.116...
Thank you for your help. I think you are correct in that the word is actually därstädes. The handwriting from the record I am reading from is very faint and hard to read.

This is very importante to me, it's the only link from my grandpa to Sweden. Somebody can translate this to english? Thank you in advance.

Enligt inhämtade uppgifter intygas pa begäran härmed att Malmö Radhusrätt den 27 september 1926 under n:r 337 i domboken beviljat em av byggmästaren Axel Ohlsson och hans hustru Frida Helena Olsson gjord adoptionsansökan beträffande Axel Bertil Nord-Nordborg, f.d. 24/1 1926 och son utom äktenskap till Klara Nord-Nordborg. Malmö den 10/1 1940. För Malmö Stads barnavardsnämd.
by abc123andreas, 2016-02-14, 23:54  Spam?  46.239.114...
It says that Axel Bertil Nord-Nordborg(born 24/1 1926) was adopted in 1926 by Axel Ohlsson and his wife Frida Helena Olsson. It also says that Axel Bertil-Nordborgs's biological mother was Klara Nord-Nordborg. The administrative authority who approved the adoption request was Malmö Radhusrätt.(Malmö is Swedens third largets city and Radhusrätt is a very old word for a specific administrative authority that handled requests such as adoptions).

Hope it helped!
