Wedding gift help! » answer
by Stuck Canuck, 2016-10-01, 06:14  Spam?  96.50.253....
I'm getting married to a wonderful Swedish man and I'd like to include some Swedish in an engraved gift and possibly my vows. I don't completely trust online translators. I'd like to ask a native Swede but I don't know any-other than my fiance! I'm looking for proper grammatical translations of the following:

My darling forever

My love for all time.

My darling for all time.

For all time

My love, my heart, my life, my forever.

I apologize for not having seen this earlier. I have no idea if this is still relevant. If it is, good, if not, I am sure it went great anyway! Congratulations!

I evighet
Min kärlek, mitt hjärta, mitt liv, min evighet.

Information about a change in the guidelines regarding delete votes » answer
by Paul (AT), 2016-06-27, 17:49  Spam?
The basic rule in GL 3 is "Always confirm the first correct posting!". So far, when there was no completely correct posting, and someone voted for a deletion, this delete vote was the first correct posting, so it had to be confirmed. However, most of the contributors understood this differently or didn't want to comply with it, for reasons I understand. In the last months this rule was challenged several times, which caused a lot of discussions. In the end I came to the conclusion that the vast majority of the community wants less strict delete rules. After discussing some text suggestions (forum: #846903), the following rule was accepted and is now effective:

+Always confirm the first correct posting! [...]
A [del] vote is considered a correct posting if no previous posting (input, vote or comment) contained...

Konstalsterna are the two words konst (art) and alster (result from work/effort) put together. Alsterna is the definite article plural of alster. Alster is a rather uncommon word in modern Swedish.

What is the English translation for the word "dårftädes". I cannot find it's meaning on the internet. The word appears after an ancestors name in a parish marriage record.

Are you sure it was "dårftädes" and not like därstädes(meaning: there; on that place)? If it really was dårftädes I have no clue; probably some regional word with an old spelling.

Thank you for your help. I think you are correct in that the word is actually därstädes. The handwriting from the record I am reading from is very faint and hard to read.

It says that Axel Bertil Nord-Nordborg(born 24/1 1926) was adopted in 1926 by Axel Ohlsson and his wife Frida Helena Olsson. It also says that Axel Bertil-Nordborgs's biological mother was Klara Nord-Nordborg. The administrative authority who approved the adoption request was Malmö Radhusrätt.(Malmö is Swedens third largets city and Radhusrätt is a very old word for a specific administrative authority that handled requests such as adoptions).

Hope it helped!

Simple translation for a tattoo  » answer
by nickolaspdoyle, 2015-01-12, 20:38  Spam?  24.59.88....
Hi all! I need your help translating something that I would like to get as a tattoo. When I was growing up, my grandfather was constantly putting me down. I would get called a "God Damn Swede" on a daily basis (I'm 50% Swedish). At the time, it hurt more than anything, but as I've grown into adulthood, I have managed to use those words as inspiration, rather than the hurt they were originally spoken for. I would love to know the proper translation into Swedish, so that I may get a constant reminder of the struggles I have had to overcome, and the power that those once hateful words have given me to overcome any obstacle thrown my way. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried the auto translators, and have gotten several  different results. Since this will be a permanent tattoo, I need to have it perfectly in Swedish! Thank you in advance!!

I realize this is a very late response, but an appropriate translation would be "jävla svenne".

I need to translate this text but I'd rather if it's written the way it's pronounced.

There are 9.7 million people in Sweden, of whom about 2 million are under the age of 18. Eighty-five percent of them live in cities. Sweden is a very multicultural country: 15 per cent of Swedes were born in another country, while about one in five children in Sweden has a family with roots in another country.
The capital of Sweden, Stockholm, is also the country’s largest city, with more than 850,000 inhabitants. Other large cities are Gothenburg, in western Sweden (population 532,000), and Malmö (population 300,000) in the south. Uppsala and Lund are well-known university cities.

Less than three per cent of Sweden’s land area is built up and forests cover 69 per cent of the country. Sweden is...

Need Help With Swedish Description of Fossil Crab » answer
by Samantha1827, 2014-07-24, 20:36  Spam?  131.123.230...
Hello! I was hoping someone could help me with a Swedish description of a fossil crab, described by Segerberg in 1900. I have been using online translators/dictionaries as well as Wessely's Dictionary of the Swedish and English Languages, but I am still finding it difficult to make sense of most of the description. The desciption consists of four small paragraphs. I will share only the first paragraph. If someone is willing to help further, I can share more! Thank you in advance!! Also - the text will be describing various aspects of the crab carapace, such as regions and ornamentation.

inflectionless verbs in Swedish » answer
by Pedroski (UN), Last modified: 2014-04-13, 01:31  Spam?
Hi, I cannot speak Swedish, but I hear, Swedish has no verb inflections, so the verb stays the same in all persons. I did ask on this forum once, and some kind soul confirmed this for me.

English is almost the same, with the exception of the Third Person, which usually carries an extra 's', as in 'likes, loves, cooks'

If English were not so, we might have some tricky situations, such as:

The horse stand stand in the meadow. (horse stand is a compound noun)
The sunflower flower in June.
The rainwater water the fields.
The sunshine shine on the water.

From these four simple examples, I hope you can see what I'm getting at.

I believe a lot of language is just habit, with a background of logic.

How does Swedish, with no verb inflections, even in the Third Person, get around this problem?? Does this kind of word double up even occur in Swedish? Could you give me any examples, maybe the four above, please?
inflection in Swedish  #769431
by wawaio, 2014-09-21, 13:25  Spam?  161.52.14...
Hi, I am only a beginner myself, but I think I can show you one aspect of how this works.

In English, some nouns and verbs have the exact same form, as you have shown in your examples.
(flower - to flower, water - to water, stand - to stand, etc.)
In Swedish, you have the infinitive form of a verb, that in some cases can be the same as the noun. A very good example for this is flower: blomma. The verb is also blomma, but only in infinitive form. There still is an inflected form, which is used for ALL PERSONS. This is the difference. So you have infinitive forms and personal forms. The verb blomma (infinitive) turns into blommar when it is used with any kind of grammatical person.

This means that "inflected" verbs usually have other endings than nouns, so you can immediately tell the difference.
(the) water: vatten, (to) water: vattna, (someone) waters: vattnar
(the) stand: stånd, (to) stand: stå, (someone) stands: står

Most verbs have an added -r in the end for persons in present tense. :)

Ordning är arbetets hävstång » answer
by Fegele (UN), 2014-01-14, 10:21  Spam?
Hej! Jag måste översätta : "Ordning är arbetets hävstång" till engelska.
Order is the lever that gets work done. (?)

Any ideas? Help! Thank you.
by Thonatas (DE/SE), Last modified: 2014-01-30, 19:00  Spam?
"Ordning är arbetets hävstång" is a saying - therefore, a direct translation does not make sense. The German translation would be "Ordnung ist das halbe Leben." (Order is half the life) - translates that one into "A tidy house, a tidy mind." and "Cleanliness is next to godliness." - maybe you have heard of one of these.

An alternative translation by me: Order is half the battle (at least the "half the battle" part is idiomatic).
